ROLE SUMMARY
As a Principal Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) at Atlassian, you will work at the forefront of applied AI, partnering directly with customers to deliver innovative AI-powered solutions using Rovo and Atlassian’s AI capabilities. This is a high-visibility role involving customer-facing engineering, solution design, and influencing product direction.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Contribute code across the entire Atlassian product suite
- Lead the design, development, and deployment of AI/ML-powered solutions tailored to customer needs
- Architect and implement robust application integrations using Python, JavaScript, or similar languages
- Influence product direction by building with customers and addressing real-world pain points
- Champion AI-augmented workflow automation within customer environments
- Oversee end-to-end deployment of AI solutions into production
- Navigate risk, compliance, and data privacy requirements (including GDPR)
- Mentor senior engineers and communicate complex technical concepts to stakeholders
SKILLS REQUIRED
- 10+ years of experience in backend software development
- 5+ years delivering impactful AI/ML solutions in production environments
- Deep expertise in applied AI/ML, generative AI, LLMs, and agent-based frameworks
- Proficiency in Python, JavaScript, or similar languages
- Experience with APIs, microservices, and enterprise-scale systems
- Strong problem-solving skills in ambiguous, fast-paced environments
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Experience with AI risk assessment, data privacy, and compliance
ELIGIBILITY
- 10+ years of backend software development experience
- Proven experience as a founding or forward-deployed engineer in 0-to-1 product development
- Ability to thrive in rapidly changing environments
- Experience mentoring or leading engineering teams is a plus
- Familiarity with Atlassian Intelligence / Rovo AI is a plus
